MyDirectives, the leading provider of digital advance care planning (ACP) tools, announced today the passing of Sherry Tevebaugh Brown, mother of MyDirectives president and CEO, Scott Brown. Mrs. Brown, who battled multiple sclerosis for nearly 40 years, is remembered as the inspiration for MyDirectives. She passed away in her sleep on February 11, 2025, peacefully and with dignity—the very values that led to the founding of MyDirectives 18 years ago this month.
Having experienced his grandmother’s difficult end of life, Scott and his wife, Géraldine, faced the reality that his mother, already living with MS, might one day experience a similar end-of-life journey devoid of dignity—one marked by emergency room visits, nursing home transfers, and a loss of control over her care. Determined to change that narrative, they founded MyDirectives, the industry leader in digital ACP solutions that give patients a voice in their care, even in their most vulnerable moments.
For nearly two decades, MyDirectives has worked to empower individuals and families to document and share their goals, preferences, and priorities, ensuring that care teams can respect their wishes at every stage of life. This mission became deeply personal in recent weeks, as Mrs. Brown developed an antibiotic-resistant infection over the holidays. Following discussions with her husband of almost 60 years, her children and grandchildren, and her care team, she made the decision to receive hospice care at home.
During her final weeks of life, Mrs. Brown was surrounded by love, dignity, and family. Thanks to MyDirectives, Mrs. Brown’s advance directives and do-not-resuscitate (DNR) order were immediately available to emergency department and mobile medical teams, eliminating any uncertainty about her wishes. Most importantly, her loved ones were united in supporting her end-of-life choices. She passed away peacefully in her sleep with her husband close by her side. There were no EMS teams, no ambulances, no unnecessary hospitalizations or interventions, and no high-cost, low-quality care. It was just as she had wanted.
Reflecting on his mother’s passing, Scott Brown said, “Advance care planning, when done correctly using available technology to support person-centric conversations and planning, works. Period. Today, the MyDirectives team mourns the loss of my mother, but we take comfort in the knowledge that our advance care planning solutions worked for the one person who inspired the very foundation of our company, just as they have undoubtedly worked for thousands of other MyDirectives users, their families, and their care teams.”
Brown’s father, Ron Brown, echoed his son’s sentiments, saying, “The MyDirectives program made my decisions so much easier as I knew with no uncertainty that I was following Sherry's desires and wishes in her final days.”
For 18 years, MyDirectives leaders have devoted every single day to the people they love — the people you love — to ensure that their goals, preferences, and priorities for their care are documented and accessible anytime, anywhere, so care teams can take their wishes into consideration when choosing what to do — and not do — for their patients. It worked for Sherry Brown.
