Wolters Kluwer Health is marking the first year of AI Labs for UpToDate® with the delivery of new AI capabilities designed to support smarter clinical decision making. AI Labs is an experimental resource that puts health system customers at the center of innovation, aiding with testing and feedback on new and prototype AI-enabled clinical decision support technologies. UpToDate Enterprise Edition customers will now have access to AI-powered search capabilities, developed in AI Labs, unleashing even faster answers to clinical questions for providers. AI Labs is now testing new features that leverage generative AI (GenAI) including enhanced drug queries and smart guided questions with prompts powered by UpToDate expert content.

“Our investment in AI Labs has produced new AI-powered functionality that delivers what providers want most – faster answers to clinical questions delivered in a responsible, vetted way that leverages trusted, evidence-based content from UpToDate they rely on to help deliver patient care,” said Greg Samios, President and CEO of Clinical Effectiveness, Wolters Kluwer Health. “We are continuing our commitment to invest in more innovative AI-powered solutions to impact how care is delivered and to address the complex challenges of healthcare today.”

A framework for AI-powered healthcare drives new solutions for clinicians

The Wolters Kluwer framework for AI-powered healthcare has four pillars reflecting priorities for healthcare providers and organizations: fast answers, clinical guidance, workflow integration, and analytics to show return on investment (ROI). The framework is delivered through continuous, responsible innovation in AI Labs and collaboration with health system customers and technology partners, as well as industry leaders and organizations.

AI Labs for UpToDate will next collaborate with UpToDate Enterprise Edition customers and partners on smart retrieval of accurate medication-related insights. As drug-related queries make up a significant portion of the questions raised in clinical care, testing will focus on smarter ways to succinctly answer questions related to medications, with dosing for example.

To support improved care, UpToDate AI Labs will also test guided questions, a feature which provides clinically relevant prompts or suggested next steps using the context of a user’s initial query based on GenAI features. Guided questions allow users to engage more naturally with UpToDate, much as they would with an expert clinician-colleague.

A responsible approach to AI is key to successful deployment in healthcare

“AI in healthcare will reach full deployment when it can be shown to benefit the hospital, the clinician, and the patient,” said Dick Taylor, MD, Chief Clinical Informatics Officer for Washington University in St. Louis and BJC Healthcare. “AI has yet to be fully deployed and embraced in patient care due, in part, to justifiable concerns about the reliability of the clinical guidance generated and the underlying content sets on which these models rely.”
